WP Engine Review: Is It the Best Managed WP Hosting?

WP Engine Review

WordPress is the backbone that supports millions of websites, so it’s not surprising that many web hosting services focus exclusively on hosting one of the world’s most popular content management systems—WP Engine among them.

WP Engine is a hosting company that many associates with high quality. It offers WordPress specific features and automatically optimizes elements of your site for the platform.

They also include several security options, like a firewall, daily updates, SSL certificates, and real-time threat detection.

WP Engine is like having an army of WordPress experts on your side for assistance. Brands like HTC, FourSquare, SoundCloud, Balsamiq, and many others use WP Engine for their WordPress hosting.

But is WP Engine the right hosting service for you?

That’s what we plan on helping you figure out through this review.

Pros and Cons

WP Engine is a popular web hosting company, but it may not be right for everyone. Consider these pros and cons before choosing a plan.

Reliability: WP Engine’s proprietary front-end layer system can handle traffic spikes easily without slowing down your site.

Optimized for WordPress: WP Engine hosts your WordPress site in a fully-managed environment. It’s a hosting platform specifically designed for installations, themes, and plugins associated with a WordPress site. There is also no need to install WordPress because the CMS comes preinstalled on the platform.

Support: not only are the online resources excellent (tutorials, how-to pages, ebooks), their support team is also super helpful and fast.

Security: WP Engine keeps your site protected with many advanced security features that other hosts don’t offer.

Daily Backups: WP Engine provides your WordPress site with automated daily backups and plugin updates.

Fast Loading Times: Servers are optimized just for WordPress, everything is cached at the server level, and you get access to their CDN.

Free Site Transfers: WP Engine will swap your websites onto their servers for free with their custom WordPress migration plugin.

Rave Reviews: WP Engine is an incredibly popular host that gets great reviews from many customers for their reliability and excellent customer service.

60-Day Money-Back Guarantee: They’re giving you plenty of time to get a feel for the hosting service, so there’s no risk in signing up.

Only hosts WordPress: if you don’t use that CRM, no point even looking at WP Engine. You can check Bluehost or DreamHost for good-performing alternatives.

Higher Costs: When comparing to shared hosting, WP Engine is more expensive, but the services they offer are well-worth the investment.

No Email Service: you’ll need to purchase your professional email addresses elsewhere.

Doesn’t Sell Domains: WP Engine offers only hosting services, not domain registrations. This means you’ll have to register your domains with another company.

WP Engine Performance

No matter how impressive the features and bonuses are, a web hosting provider is useless if the performance of your website is lacking. This is definitely not an area where WP Engine falls short.

Each plan has more than enough resources to accommodate the appropriate website sizes and volumes of traffic. This translates to high uptime rates and blazing fast loading speed.

WP Engine certainly promote their ability to deliver a high-performance hosting service, but is that really the case? Let’s find out by looking at the loading times as well as their ability to handle multiple visitors at the same time.

WP Engine Speed

wpengine speed

Our test site loaded in less than a second for a server in New York City, NY. Considering that we didn’t need to install any performance optimization this result is quite good.

Test your website with the WP Engine WordPress Speed Test.

Next, we wanted to check how WP Engine servers respond under peak traffic. To measure this we ran the Load Impact test. We gradually built up to 100 unique visitors at once to see how the server would handle increased requests from multiple connections at once.

Here is a screenshot of the results.

wpengine loadimpact test

The green line represents page load time and the blue line represents the number of users on the site. As you can see, our test site performed really well up to 80 users, after that it started to slow down.

As you can see in the chart, that WP Engine server performance remained steady throughout the test as the numbers of users increased.

WP Engine Server Response Time

The next thing we tested was the server response time from different geographic regions. For this test, we used a tool called Bitcatcha.

Here are WP Engine’s server response time results:

wpengine respose time

As you can see in the screenshot, WP Engine server response time remained under less than half a second for all geographic locations. It was particularly great in the United States.

Support and Customer Service

WPEngine offers a ton of support options. First, there’s the resource center, which is an educational center for DIY help on improving sites. It offers basic tips as well as more esoteric topics.

WPEngine resource center

Then there’s WPEngine’s traditional support section that offers several help articles upfront organized by categories. There’s also a large search box at the top to help you drill down into a specific topic.

Finally, WPEngine’s Solution Center has a lot of helpful articles and tips on every topic imaginable for operating your site.

If those support resources aren’t enough, WPEngine provides live chat, and 24/7 phone and trouble ticket support for all packages, excluding the Startup package.

Unfortunately, WP Engine’s toll-free, 24/7 telephone support isn’t available to people who’ve signed up for the Startup plan; you must be at least a Growth subscriber to get someone on the horn around the clock. Otherwise, you’re limited to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (CST) hours. This could prove vexing if you’re a Startup customer who wants to speak to a human being at 3 in the morning. WP Engine compensates with 24/7 live chat, so you aren’t totally left out in the cold if you’re a Startup customer.

It’s always a good thing when a hosting service is willing to give you a financial guarantee. Most hosts we’ve reviewed offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. WP Engine actually doubles that period, which is awesome.

They’re giving you plenty of time to get a feel for the hosting service, so there’s no risk in signing up.

WPEngine Hosting Plans and Features

WP Engine offers four hosting plans, they are:

  • Startup
  • Growth
  • Scale
  • Custom

All plans come with more than 35 StudioPress themes, 24/7 chat support, free site transfers, an SSL certificate, and a global CDN.

WPEngine Hosting Plans

Below you’ll find an in-depth review of each plan that includes the price, features, and benefits.

This one would be great for a small website or blog. The only exception would be if you work with a lot of heavy video or audio files, as the 10GB might be too limiting for your needs.

$22.5 a month for one WordPress website, up to 25K visits, and 50 GB bandwidth per month, with 10 GB of storage.

It’s a basic plan with straightforward pricing, but WP Engine gives you the option to add-on some extra features during the checkout process.

While they may sound appealing, you can skip these. I really can’t justify the additional costs for an entry-level plan. A small personal blog with under 25,000 visitors won’t need these extras to run smoothly.

If you’re going to spring for anything, enhanced site security would be my only recommendation.

As the name suggests, a good plan for a growing business, a professional blog, or eCommerce. It’s quite a leap from the Startup plan in terms of price and features. Some of the advanced tools like Multisite and Geotargeting become available.

Starting at $86.25 per month, a tier that offers ten WordPress installations, 100,000 visitors, 200GB of monthly data transfers, and 20GB of storage. These features make the Growth plan an appealing option for growing businesses.

Another big difference between the Startup and Growth plan is the level of customer support. With Startup, you’re limited 24/7 live chat support.

But Growth also comes with 24/7 phone support. So this is a huge bonus for those of you who would rather get on the phone and talk to an agent as opposed to chatting online.

Another big upgrade in terms of visitor numbers and price. The features are pretty much the same as with the Growth plan, so it’s really about managing bandwidth for a big, popular site at this point.

Starting at $217.5 per month, which boasts 30 WordPress installations, 400,000 visits, 500GB of monthly data transfers, and 50GB of storage.

Those are enough resources to keep your site running smoothly even with increased visitors and traffic surges.

The features included with the Scale plan are actually pretty comparable to the Growth plan. So the major difference is really just the ability to accommodate more traffic and the extra resources to support it as well.

This plan is best for large websites and WordPress users that want to host multiple sites on one plan.

WP Engine also offers a high-end Custom plan that’s designed for “large businesses and mission-critical sites,” according to the company’s webpage.

With Custom, you get millions of monthly visits to your site, 400GB of monthly data transfers, and up to 1TB of storage. You must call a WP Engine sales representative for pricing information, though. It’s definitely not cheap web hosting, as WP Engine positions itself as a high-end managed WordPress host.

Who is WP Engine for?

WP Engine isn’t for everyone, if you’re not using WordPress, you should look at other providers. But even WordPress users who run small sites can probably find more affordable hosting elsewhere (e.g. Bluehost, SiteGround, or DreamHost) if having a cost-effective solution is more important than performance.

With that said, there are a number of different groups that would benefit from the managed WordPress hosting WPEngine offers

Professional WordPress Developers and Designers

Given the sheer amount of features which are focused towards developers, one can easily see that this focus is ideal for developers, designers, and agencies working with WP, who need a solid reliable service which they can use during their development and which they can then hand over cleanly to their customers.

Such customers typically have clients who can pay for a maintenance fee, which the developer can mark up to their client – whilst not having to do any work at all because it is all handled by the service – the hosting, the security, the speed is all done.

Non-technical growing business/website owners

When you’re a business owner who has a website that is generating a bunch of revenue, dealing with technical issues, or just maintaining the site, is simply a waste of time. That’s beside the fact that running your business should be your area of expertise rather than caring for your website.

These customers are those whose sites are already successful, beyond the capabilities of shared WordPress hosting, and need a better, more reliable service.

Budget is not really an issue here, because the site is a money-maker. In fact, downtime is much more of an issue than paying for reliability and uptime.

If you are a growing entrepreneur, you know that you can rely on WP Engine. When there are problems, excellent customer support is only a phone call away.

Budding Companies looking for a long-term platform

The third type of customer who this service is a great fit for are those companies who are looking for a reliable long-term partner for their website/platform that they are building. They know that shifting from one host to another is a headache, whilst the WP Engine backend and platform is a much better option than having to shop around once the site is launched and growing.

WP Engine has the scalability these customers require to get these businesses on track – with plenty of time and cost-savings for them.

So what can we say about WP Engine in the end?

I can see how it may seem a bit pricey and limiting for certain users. If you don’t use WordPress, or if you’re worried about visitor limits, this probably isn’t a great deal, check out alternatives like SiteGround, Bluehost, or DreamHost.

But for professional WordPress sites, you really get your money’s worth in terms of support, backup features, and performance. To me, this is the holy trinity of must-haves when your website is also your business, and I’d be happy to recommend WP Engine.

WP Engine Alternatives

Now if you still need alternatives, here’s what I would recommend:

SiteGround doesn’t limit your bandwidth and traffic.

DreamHost is much more affordable but doesn’t offer staging for the shared hosting plans.

But, if you still want to use WP Engine, use our special BlueHost link to get started.

I present you two tools from the “Competitive Research toolkit“. Follow me!

1. Traffic Analytics: Know Everything About Your Competitors

Semrush traffic analytics tool

The “Traffic Analytics” tool, as its name suggests, allows you to analyze the data concerning the traffic of a website and the engagement generated with Internet users: the number of visits, unique visitors, the average visit duration, bounce rate, traffic sources, best-performing pages, geographic distribution, etc.

In short, you will understand, a bit of everything you have in your audience analysis tool (Google Analytics, etc).

But, while it is easy to get this data for your site through your audience analysis tool, it is less obvious to get this information for your competitor’s site. What Semrush makes available to us here is a real gold mine of information. Used intelligently, this data will allow you to take the temperature of the industry and clearly identify the strength of your site.

The tool, therefore, allows you to have an overview of your site performance compared to your competitors’ site. And sometimes it can have good or bad surprises. The most important thing is to know your place and make the right decisions for the future.

And since we are here in a competitive study, it is appropriate to select your competitors for analysis and comparison.

So, here are some data and the graphs that you can get from the Semrush traffic analytics tool:

  • Estimation of total site traffic of any domain and its sub-domains.
  • Visits analysis, unique visitors, pages/visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate.

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool overview

Interesting to know where your site is located. Does it get more or fewer visits than its competitors? What actions can you take to reverse the trend?

Traffic Sources

How do these analyzed sites get their traffic? Is it rather direct traffic? From backlinks? SEO? Social? Advertisements? On which domain is it interesting to try to get a backlink?

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool - Traffic Sources

Interesting to know the competitors’ efforts on the backlink strategy for example, or to know if they make advertising campaigns, etc. There is also a notion of reputation and popularity to read between the lines with direct traffic.

Traffic by Country

Geographical distribution, which countries do visitors come from? What percentage of traffic comes from these countries?

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool - Traffic by Country

Interesting to know this figure to see the extent of traffic.

Audience Overlap

What percentage of visitors come to my site and also visit one of my competitors’ sites? Which competitor has the greatest audience overlap?

Interesting to know if I am at the same target as my competitors. Strategies are then necessary: change the target so as not to be in direct competition, or, on the contrary, go for it and try to capture more of my competitors’ audience.

This is roughly what you can get with the Semrush traffic analytics tool. Everything you need to analyze traffic, visits, sources, both for your sites and those of your competitors.

You’ll find your strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll be able to make strategic decisions based on findings closer to reality. Having these estimates is an invaluable competitive advantage.

2. Market Explorer: Know Everything About Your Industry

Semrush Market Explorer tool

Market Explorer allows us to study and deepen a niche market in order to better understand the target audience. With this tool, you will be able to compare your site to that of your competitors and evaluate the demographics and characteristics of your market.

Knowing your market is a strong competitive advantage because only then will we be able to differentiate ourselves from others and gain market share.

Who is in my market? Who are the leaders and challengers? What are the strategies of my competitors? What are the market opportunities? How can I leverage this data for my business? So many questions to ask and which must be answered in the most relevant way possible in order to gain positions and climb the ranks!

The figures and data from Market Explorer are then the raw material of our analysis.

Zoom on the data and their graphs that you can get with the Semrush Market Explorer tool:

Growth Quadrant

List of relevant sites to the chosen domain and an estimation of their market share. You get a list of sites positioned on the market according to their traffic volume and also a focus on the most relevant sites for the topic. Top 10, top 20, top 30 of the sites best placed on the topic of the site analyzed: the leaders, new sites with high potential, sites with interesting growth, and sites well established on the market!

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Overview

Interesting to know your competitors to know exactly with whom you share the cake. According to their weight, their strategies, their targets… You will be able to decide to follow them or to move away by changing strategic direction.

Domain vs Market Dynamics

Details on industry traffic trends and its own performance. You get the same list of market competitors but ranked according to their percentage of traffic. You also have the ability to compare your performance to industry performance.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Domain vs Market Dynamics

Interesting to know exactly which market player gets the most visits, even by the source of traffic (direct, referral, search, social, paid). Interesting also to see the disparities between players and traffic trends. Enough to put pressure and try to climb to the top!

Market Traffic

Trends in traffic sources. You will be able to identify the traffic sources in the market. Which support is the most used in your industry (direct, referral, search, social, paid)?

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Traffic

Interesting to know exactly which media your target uses to arrive on a site in the industry. This will guide your acquisition strategies.

In-Market Audience Interests

Main interests of the audience present on the market. You will be able to understand what the main interests of your readers are.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - In-Market Audience Interests

Interesting to know exactly the interest of its target. This will allow you to respond to them through relevant and value-added articles.

Market Audience Gender & Age

Market audience demographics. You will be able to explore details on the gender and age groups of industry targets.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Audience Gender & Age

Interesting to know exactly your target. Studies on personas and profiles are very interesting, even indispensable to target your communication, your writings, and your strategy. We need to know our target, this is the key to absolute relevance!

To finish this mini-presentation, which I hope you will find useful, please note that in Market Explorer, two other tabs are available:

  • The first “Relevant Sites” will allow you to see at a glance the traffic data and traffic sources. Interesting to be able to use this listing according to your needs. You can filter the file, export it … and add sites to regular monitoring.
  • The second tab, the “Custom Market“, allows you to track sites defined beforehand. You will have exactly the same data as presented above, but for the sites you have chosen. You will not be able to follow all your competitors, and you will have to make choices.

You know your target now, your competition, your market, etc. The next step is to reflect on your strategy to make it as relevant as possible. The winning recipe is yours, copying a competitor incorrectly will not pay off.
