SiteGround Review: Is It Still The Best Web Host In 2020?

SiteGround Review

SiteGround is one of the most popular and highest rated hosting provider in the WordPress community. They are known for their top-notch customer support and fast reliable hosting plans. Their WordPress optimized hosting includes everything you’ll need to create and grow a successful blog.

The company offers shared hosting, dedicated servers, cloud hosting, domain registration, and more.

According to Google Trends, the popularity of SiteGround is growing at an enormous rate for the last 6-7 years.

Clearly, SiteGround has adopted a sustainable business model that focuses on the user experience rather than solely on making a profit. Their ultimate objective is to provide website users with a rich experience.

That’s why more than 2 million websites trust SiteGround for their hosting needs.

Bottom line: Don’t want to read all the details? Let us summarize it for you. We found SiteGround to be noticeably faster and extremely reliable. Their hosting plans are flexible, and their customer support is one of the best in the industry.

That’s why we’ve chosen to recommend SiteGround as one of the best WordPress hosting companies.

So, should you host with SiteGround? And, if so, which plan should you choose? How much do you need to pay?

Let’s dive in…

Officially Recommended by WordPress

A time-tested and reliable host will keep both of your feet on the ground. That’s why there’s no surprise that SiteGround is a popular web hosting provider. It is renowned for its speed, rock-solid reliability, stellar support, and a set of strong features.

They offer premium hosting plans that are specifically optimized for WordPress with unique in-house speed and security solutions. That’s why they’re an official WordPress recommended hosting provider.

SiteGround Pricing

SiteGround offers several types of hosting. Let’s check the prices for each type of hosting individually.

Siteground offers three types of shared web hosting plans. They also offer cloud hosting and enterprise hosting which is beyond the needs of most small business owners and bloggers.

For this Siteground review, I focused on their shared hosting plans, which is the most popular service.

SiteGround’s shared hosting is the best way to start a new website. Their shared plans are available in three levels to match different budgets.

But, of course, not all SiteGround plans are equal. Below, we’ll take a look at their main differences.

StartUp: Ideal for users that have a single small-to-medium-sized website and need less than 10 GB of space. In this plan you’ll have the cache service for static content only (this will make your website faster). Advanced features (e.g. staging) aren’t part of this package.

GrowBig: This plan was created to store more than one website, with 20 GB of space. You’ll have access to the staging tool, and their (smart) on-demand backups system. On top of the caching system for the static content, this plan makes it possible to cache dynamic content.

GoGeek: In addition to offering you more space (40 GB) and better-performing servers, this plan gives you access to pre-installed Git repositories. It also comes with support for white label hosting, something agencies will appreciate.

SiteGround Pros

There is plenty of upside to using SiteGround as a web hosting service. I just want to quickly highlight and explain why this platform stands out from its competitors.

Here are some of the advantages that make SiteGround one of the top-rated hosting companies in the world.

1. Excellent uptime

SiteGround has the best performance and uptime with an average of 99.99% to 100% which is the best in the industry. You can be sure that your website will be always on and live which is what every customer wants.

Siteground performance uptime

Reliable uptime like this keeps website visitors happy. But more importantly, it means your site is almost guaranteed to be working around the clock so you won’t miss out when your customers want to make a purchase, either.

Since SiteGround uses the best technology and has their servers in 3 continents and 6 different locations, you will also enjoy knowing that your website loads fast within milliseconds vs few seconds or minutes which by Google speed standard is unacceptable. You can also run through the GTMetrix website and test for speed performance.

2. Excellent support and assistance

Their customer support is amazing to say the least. They offer 24/7 phone, live chat, and ticket-based support.

They provide a knowledge base for customers to find their own quick answers.

Unlike other hosts, there was no noticeable delay in answers. So it seemed like he knew what he was talking about and didn’t have to look up answers each time we sent over a new question.

3. Free CDN and SSL

Web hosting services will always try to hit you with add-ons at an upcharge. But SiteGround throws in some great features at no extra charge.

Your membership comes with one free site migration. This can be done with their migrator plugin, which we talked about earlier.

SiteGround plans also come with a free CDN and free SSL certificate.

Cloudflare CDN keeps images, videos, and other large files off of your server. As a result, your server is always fast. Since SiteGround users servers all over the globe, the CDN makes sure that files are stored closer to website visitors for fast delivery.

The SSL certificate is required for all websites. It protects private information from being transmitted between devices and websites. SiteGround throwing this in for free is a nice touch since you’d need to get one regardless.

4. Free site migration for 1 website

Whenever we see web hosts come out with a “DIY migration” option, it makes us a little anxious. That’s because most of them aren’t great, and they end up putting more burden on the customer.

SiteGround might be the exception to this rule, though. They’ve created a free WordPress Migration plugin that you can upload to any site.

Siteground free site migration

There aren’t any long and boring walkthroughs, either. You simply generate a token from inside your SiteGround hosting account and the plugin will quickly help do the heavy lifting.

Yes, it still requires you to do a little work. But the good news is that you can migrate as many websites as you want with this option. (In comparison, some hosts that offer “free migrations” cap it after only a few, forcing you to pay after a certain point.)

If you’d rather have some professional, hands-on help, SiteGround will throw in the free service on their higher-tier plans (GrowBig and up).

If you exceed the limits on each plan, they charge a nominal fee of $30 for each additional site.

5. Flexible

Nearly any website can be hosted on SiteGround.

It’s a great web hosting service for beginners and experienced users alike. You don’t need to be too tech-savvy to understand how the platform works and get your site hosted. But on the other hand, if you like to be more hands-on with the server and take advantage of certain features, SiteGround has plans with you in mind.

There are also enough options on SiteGround to accommodate different web hosting needs, such as shared hosting and cloud hosting.

They have plans suitable for a wide range of average site traffic as well. So as your website scales, you can always upgrade to a plan that will meet your needs.

SiteGround Cons

SiteGround impressed us with near-flawless uptime and their guarantee of free service if uptime dips below 99.99%. Their loading speeds are quite good, even if they’re not the fastest out there. Also, SiteGround offers a variety of apps to make both beginners and advanced users happy.

However, there are a few drawbacks to consider before signing up. So here are some disadvantages to choosing SiteGround as your host:

1. Higher Renewal Rates

SiteGround’s cheapest plan, StartUp, features a low $6.99/month advertised price on their website.

This deal looks a little too good to be true because it is. Almost every web host we’ve reviewed to date uses the same trick. They catch your attention with a low introductory rate, only to double (or even triple) the price when it’s time to renew.

For example, that $6.99/month rate jumps up to $14.99 when you renew. SiteGround’s other plans hike up to $24.99 and $39.99/month respectively.

The best solution to this is to lock-in the longest term possible (36 months on SiteGround) to take advantage of that low rate for as long as you can.

2. No Free Domain Name

Most web hosts throw in ‘freebies’ to attract new customers.

That often includes the low introductory rate and additional services like email or migrations.

A free domain name for the first year is almost always on that list, too.

SiteGround, unfortunately, doesn’t do that. If you don’t already have a domain name, they’ll charge you for one from day one, starting at $15.95/year.

3. Setup fee for monthly billing:

There is a $14.95 setup fee if you choose monthly billing. But if you sign up for a longer billing period, then you’ll get a bigger discount and no setup fee.

They offer a 30-day money-back guarantee anyway, so it’s a good idea to choose a longer billing period when you sign up.

Blogging With Siteground

Many bloggers struggle with technical challenges like what to do when their WordPress installation inevitably breaks.

They also sometimes opt for the cheapest hosting provider and then wonder why they don’t have access to things like quality technical support and backups.

WordPress is the premier platform for blogging online and this hosting provider specialises in WordPress installations as evidenced by their one-click install. If you start a blog with Siteground, they will update your plug-ins automatically.

It’s also reassuring to be able to open a live chat window and ask questions to a knowledgeable expert.

Another benefit is when you take out a plan and purchase your domain name, you can have your WordPress blog up and running within minutes.

SiteGround’s WordPress Optimization Plugin

SiteGround has a plugin for optimizing websites for WordPress. It’s amazing – it does the work of 3 or 4 plugins. On top of managing your website’s cache options, it also gives you options for:

  • Compressing HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images
  • Lazy loading images
  • Combination of CSS files
  • Optimization of browser cache
  • GZIP Compression

The results are exceptional. That’s why I think that SiteGround is one of the quickest hosting services I have ever tried. If you need high-speed hosting for your project, I’d really recommend it.

Who Uses SiteGround Hosting?

Who uses SiteGround as Hosting? From our experience, we can say that SiteGround hosting is used by people who are looking for affordable hosting with speed and amazing support.

For the most part, those are professional bloggers, WordPress agencies, or developers since SiteGround has a free WordPress staging, and most important people who sell online since SiteGround has the best uptime 99.99% – 100% this is great news for any WooCommerce site because you don’t want any eCommerce website to be down as it’s not making money for you or your client.

How to Install WordPress with SiteGround

How To Restore Your WordPress Backups Using Siteground

Should you forget to perform your backups, don’t you worry. SiteGround got you covered with its automated daily backups.

Here is what I liked about it:

  • The backup feature is seamlessly integrated with SiteGround’s system. So no foreign system which could create conflicts needs to be used.
  • Backups for each site are managed individually, which means that you can create a backup for just one of your sites instead of having to create backups for all your SiteGround hosted sites.
  • Having the option to create on-demand backups is a dream for those pushing code or system and plugin updates. Before doing so, you can create a backup for your peace of mind.
  • Backups are useless unless you have an easy and effective way to restore them. SiteGround only requires a couple of clicks.
  • And finally, the on-demand and restore backup options are included in the GrowBig and GoGeek plans at no extra cost – other providers charge for similar (worse) features.

There are a couple of things I’d like to be a bit different, for example, there’s a quota limit of 5 manual backups per site (you’ll have to delete an old one if the limit was reached), and there’s no way to download your backups, you can only restore them.

Check out the following video tutorial to see how to restore your WordPress backups using Siteground:

Conclusion: Is SiteGround the Right Choice for You?

After reading our detailed SiteGround review, you might be wondering if SiteGround is the right choice for your website?

If you want a fast and reliable web hosting service with great customer support, then SiteGround is perfect for you. They have hosting plans for every budget and each plan comes with a great set of features.

All their shared hosting plans include SSD storage, easy setup of Let’s Encrypt free SSL and Cloudflare CDN service, 1-click WordPress installer, and free migration.

I’ve found cheaper web hosting providers, but many of those don’t offer what Siteground delivers in terms of support, backups, and security. Starting a blog with Siteground is a good choice too.

My main quibble with them is their pricing is somewhat confusing, but otherwise, they are ideal for authors who want a website and new bloggers.

If you are just starting a website for the first time, then you will certainly appreciate SiteGround’s customer support.

I hope you found this SiteGround review helpful.

I present you two tools from the “Competitive Research toolkit“. Follow me!

1. Traffic Analytics: Know Everything About Your Competitors

Semrush traffic analytics tool

The “Traffic Analytics” tool, as its name suggests, allows you to analyze the data concerning the traffic of a website and the engagement generated with Internet users: the number of visits, unique visitors, the average visit duration, bounce rate, traffic sources, best-performing pages, geographic distribution, etc.

In short, you will understand, a bit of everything you have in your audience analysis tool (Google Analytics, etc).

But, while it is easy to get this data for your site through your audience analysis tool, it is less obvious to get this information for your competitor’s site. What Semrush makes available to us here is a real gold mine of information. Used intelligently, this data will allow you to take the temperature of the industry and clearly identify the strength of your site.

The tool, therefore, allows you to have an overview of your site performance compared to your competitors’ site. And sometimes it can have good or bad surprises. The most important thing is to know your place and make the right decisions for the future.

And since we are here in a competitive study, it is appropriate to select your competitors for analysis and comparison.

So, here are some data and the graphs that you can get from the Semrush traffic analytics tool:

  • Estimation of total site traffic of any domain and its sub-domains.
  • Visits analysis, unique visitors, pages/visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate.

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool overview

Interesting to know where your site is located. Does it get more or fewer visits than its competitors? What actions can you take to reverse the trend?

Traffic Sources

How do these analyzed sites get their traffic? Is it rather direct traffic? From backlinks? SEO? Social? Advertisements? On which domain is it interesting to try to get a backlink?

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool - Traffic Sources

Interesting to know the competitors’ efforts on the backlink strategy for example, or to know if they make advertising campaigns, etc. There is also a notion of reputation and popularity to read between the lines with direct traffic.

Traffic by Country

Geographical distribution, which countries do visitors come from? What percentage of traffic comes from these countries?

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool - Traffic by Country

Interesting to know this figure to see the extent of traffic.

Audience Overlap

What percentage of visitors come to my site and also visit one of my competitors’ sites? Which competitor has the greatest audience overlap?

Interesting to know if I am at the same target as my competitors. Strategies are then necessary: change the target so as not to be in direct competition, or, on the contrary, go for it and try to capture more of my competitors’ audience.

This is roughly what you can get with the Semrush traffic analytics tool. Everything you need to analyze traffic, visits, sources, both for your sites and those of your competitors.

You’ll find your strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll be able to make strategic decisions based on findings closer to reality. Having these estimates is an invaluable competitive advantage.

2. Market Explorer: Know Everything About Your Industry

Semrush Market Explorer tool

Market Explorer allows us to study and deepen a niche market in order to better understand the target audience. With this tool, you will be able to compare your site to that of your competitors and evaluate the demographics and characteristics of your market.

Knowing your market is a strong competitive advantage because only then will we be able to differentiate ourselves from others and gain market share.

Who is in my market? Who are the leaders and challengers? What are the strategies of my competitors? What are the market opportunities? How can I leverage this data for my business? So many questions to ask and which must be answered in the most relevant way possible in order to gain positions and climb the ranks!

The figures and data from Market Explorer are then the raw material of our analysis.

Zoom on the data and their graphs that you can get with the Semrush Market Explorer tool:

Growth Quadrant

List of relevant sites to the chosen domain and an estimation of their market share. You get a list of sites positioned on the market according to their traffic volume and also a focus on the most relevant sites for the topic. Top 10, top 20, top 30 of the sites best placed on the topic of the site analyzed: the leaders, new sites with high potential, sites with interesting growth, and sites well established on the market!

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Overview

Interesting to know your competitors to know exactly with whom you share the cake. According to their weight, their strategies, their targets… You will be able to decide to follow them or to move away by changing strategic direction.

Domain vs Market Dynamics

Details on industry traffic trends and its own performance. You get the same list of market competitors but ranked according to their percentage of traffic. You also have the ability to compare your performance to industry performance.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Domain vs Market Dynamics

Interesting to know exactly which market player gets the most visits, even by the source of traffic (direct, referral, search, social, paid). Interesting also to see the disparities between players and traffic trends. Enough to put pressure and try to climb to the top!

Market Traffic

Trends in traffic sources. You will be able to identify the traffic sources in the market. Which support is the most used in your industry (direct, referral, search, social, paid)?

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Traffic

Interesting to know exactly which media your target uses to arrive on a site in the industry. This will guide your acquisition strategies.

In-Market Audience Interests

Main interests of the audience present on the market. You will be able to understand what the main interests of your readers are.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - In-Market Audience Interests

Interesting to know exactly the interest of its target. This will allow you to respond to them through relevant and value-added articles.

Market Audience Gender & Age

Market audience demographics. You will be able to explore details on the gender and age groups of industry targets.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Audience Gender & Age

Interesting to know exactly your target. Studies on personas and profiles are very interesting, even indispensable to target your communication, your writings, and your strategy. We need to know our target, this is the key to absolute relevance!

To finish this mini-presentation, which I hope you will find useful, please note that in Market Explorer, two other tabs are available:

  • The first “Relevant Sites” will allow you to see at a glance the traffic data and traffic sources. Interesting to be able to use this listing according to your needs. You can filter the file, export it … and add sites to regular monitoring.
  • The second tab, the “Custom Market“, allows you to track sites defined beforehand. You will have exactly the same data as presented above, but for the sites you have chosen. You will not be able to follow all your competitors, and you will have to make choices.
