Semrush Competitive Research Toolkit

Semrush Competitive Research Toolkit

Semrush provides its users with a toolkit called “Competitive Research“. This toolkit includes 13 specialized tools, which will help you monitor the overall performance of a competitor’s site. An overview of performance related to organic research (SEO), advertising, content and PR (Content Marketing), and social media.

Looking at what our competitors are doing, what are their strengths and weaknesses, knowing how they rank well on search engines, will allow us to know the market well, gain a real competitive advantage, and be able to make intelligent decisions with a strong impact on the overall visibility and communication strategy of a site.

Imagine being able to reverse the success of one of your competitor’s largest sites and identify its weaknesses and take its place for certain keywords? That’s the beauty of competition.

Semrush Competitive Research Toolkit

We will see in this article how it works!

The ultimate goal of this analysis is to get an overview of the strategies that work for your competitors in your market so that you can adopt them, improve them, and gain a competitive advantage. This analysis is focused on competitors’ sites.

Why Should You Conduct a Competitive Analysis?

Tell me, have you ever thought about any of the following?

  • Increase your traffic exponentially using only the resources at your disposal.
  • Find keywords with high search volume that have not been targeted by other SEOs in your space.
  • Find keywords that give your competitors the highest ROI.
  • Search for high competitive keywords used by your competition and win.

These are the opportunities that SEO competitor analysis offers.

More specifically, it tells you how you stack up against your competition.

SEO has a competitive factor. You want to rank higher, spend less, and get the best return on investment. The way to do this is to know where you stand compared to your competitors.

I present you two tools from the “Competitive Research toolkit“. Follow me!

1. Traffic Analytics: Know Everything About Your Competitors

Semrush traffic analytics tool

The “Traffic Analytics” tool, as its name suggests, allows you to analyze the data concerning the traffic of a website and the engagement generated with Internet users: the number of visits, unique visitors, the average visit duration, bounce rate, traffic sources, best-performing pages, geographic distribution, etc.

In short, you will understand, a bit of everything you have in your audience analysis tool (Google Analytics, etc).

But, while it is easy to get this data for your site through your audience analysis tool, it is less obvious to get this information for your competitor’s site. What Semrush makes available to us here is a real gold mine of information. Used intelligently, this data will allow you to take the temperature of the industry and clearly identify the strength of your site.

The tool, therefore, allows you to have an overview of your site performance compared to your competitors’ site. And sometimes it can have good or bad surprises. The most important thing is to know your place and make the right decisions for the future.

And since we are here in a competitive study, it is appropriate to select your competitors for analysis and comparison.

So, here are some data and the graphs that you can get from the Semrush traffic analytics tool:

  • Estimation of total site traffic of any domain and its sub-domains.
  • Visits analysis, unique visitors, pages/visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate.

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool overview

Interesting to know where your site is located. Does it get more or fewer visits than its competitors? What actions can you take to reverse the trend?

Traffic Sources

How do these analyzed sites get their traffic? Is it rather direct traffic? From backlinks? SEO? Social? Advertisements? On which domain is it interesting to try to get a backlink?

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool - Traffic Sources

Interesting to know the competitors’ efforts on the backlink strategy for example, or to know if they make advertising campaigns, etc. There is also a notion of reputation and popularity to read between the lines with direct traffic.

Traffic by Country

Geographical distribution, which countries do visitors come from? What percentage of traffic comes from these countries?

Semrush Traffic Analytics tool - Traffic by Country

Interesting to know this figure to see the extent of traffic.

Audience Overlap

What percentage of visitors come to my site and also visit one of my competitors’ sites? Which competitor has the greatest audience overlap?

Interesting to know if I am at the same target as my competitors. Strategies are then necessary: change the target so as not to be in direct competition, or, on the contrary, go for it and try to capture more of my competitors’ audience.

This is roughly what you can get with the Semrush traffic analytics tool. Everything you need to analyze traffic, visits, sources, both for your sites and those of your competitors.

You’ll find your strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll be able to make strategic decisions based on findings closer to reality. Having these estimates is an invaluable competitive advantage.

2. Market Explorer: Know Everything About Your Industry

Semrush Market Explorer tool

Market Explorer allows us to study and deepen a niche market in order to better understand the target audience. With this tool, you will be able to compare your site to that of your competitors and evaluate the demographics and characteristics of your market.

Knowing your market is a strong competitive advantage because only then will we be able to differentiate ourselves from others and gain market share.

Who is in my market? Who are the leaders and challengers? What are the strategies of my competitors? What are the market opportunities? How can I leverage this data for my business? So many questions to ask and which must be answered in the most relevant way possible in order to gain positions and climb the ranks!

The figures and data from Market Explorer are then the raw material of our analysis.

Zoom on the data and their graphs that you can get with the Semrush Market Explorer tool:

Growth Quadrant

List of relevant sites to the chosen domain and an estimation of their market share. You get a list of sites positioned on the market according to their traffic volume and also a focus on the most relevant sites for the topic. Top 10, top 20, top 30 of the sites best placed on the topic of the site analyzed: the leaders, new sites with high potential, sites with interesting growth, and sites well established on the market!

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Overview

Interesting to know your competitors to know exactly with whom you share the cake. According to their weight, their strategies, their targets… You will be able to decide to follow them or to move away by changing strategic direction.

Domain vs Market Dynamics

Details on industry traffic trends and its own performance. You get the same list of market competitors but ranked according to their percentage of traffic. You also have the ability to compare your performance to industry performance.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Domain vs Market Dynamics

Interesting to know exactly which market player gets the most visits, even by the source of traffic (direct, referral, search, social, paid). Interesting also to see the disparities between players and traffic trends. Enough to put pressure and try to climb to the top!

Market Traffic

Trends in traffic sources. You will be able to identify the traffic sources in the market. Which support is the most used in your industry (direct, referral, search, social, paid)?

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Traffic

Interesting to know exactly which media your target uses to arrive on a site in the industry. This will guide your acquisition strategies.

In-Market Audience Interests

Main interests of the audience present on the market. You will be able to understand what the main interests of your readers are.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - In-Market Audience Interests

Interesting to know exactly the interest of its target. This will allow you to respond to them through relevant and value-added articles.

Market Audience Gender & Age

Market audience demographics. You will be able to explore details on the gender and age groups of industry targets.

Semrush Market Explorer tool - Market Audience Gender & Age

Interesting to know exactly your target. Studies on personas and profiles are very interesting, even indispensable to target your communication, your writings, and your strategy. We need to know our target, this is the key to absolute relevance!

To finish this mini-presentation, which I hope you will find useful, please note that in Market Explorer, two other tabs are available:

  • The first “Relevant Sites” will allow you to see at a glance the traffic data and traffic sources. Interesting to be able to use this listing according to your needs. You can filter the file, export it … and add sites to regular monitoring.
  • The second tab, the “Custom Market“, allows you to track sites defined beforehand. You will have exactly the same data as presented above, but for the sites you have chosen. You will not be able to follow all your competitors, and you will have to make choices.

You know your target now, your competition, your market, etc. The next step is to reflect on your strategy to make it as relevant as possible. The winning recipe is yours, copying a competitor incorrectly will not pay off.

Position Tracking allows you to track your site’s search performance across multiple locations and various devices all at the same time.

First, let’s set the Position tracking tool up,

Step 1: In the setup menu, choose what you want to track: a root domain, a subdomain, a URL, or a subfolder.

SEMrush Position Tracking setup - step 1

Setting up your Business Name will help you see the locations where you succeeded with getting into Local Packs.

Step 2: Unlike the SEMrush ‘domain analytics reports’ which provide data on the national level, Position Tracking allows you to track rankings for a specific location!

SEMrush Position Tracking setup - step 2

Step 3: Next, add up to 20 competitors to compare your rankings to.

SEMrush Position Tracking setup - step 3

They can be either added manually or selected from a suggested list.

Step 4: Finally, choose keywords for your tracking campaign.

SEMrush Position Tracking setup - step 4

You can add them manually, receive suggestions based on SEMrush’s organic or paid positions reports, receive suggestions from your Google Analytics account, or import them from a file.

The Overview Page

Once the report is gathered, you will jump to the “Position Tracking” overview page.

There you will find the visibility trend of your website.

SEMrush Position Tracking overview page

  • 100% visibility means that the tracked domain, subdomain, or URL has the first position for every keyword in the project.
  • While zero visibility indicates that it doesn’t rank in Google’s top-100 for these keywords.

You can analyze how your competitors succeeded in ranking for the keywords of interest by seeing which domain has the highest “visibility” metric.

SEMrush Position Tracking tool

Also, keep an eye on the estimated traffic and average position metrics.

Estimated traffic is a calculation that predicts how many people will visit the domain daily from the keywords being tracked.

The average position is the average of all the rankings for the keywords in your campaign.

The Ranking Distribution Report

The “Ranking Distribution” report allows you to:

– Find out who attracts more attention by comparing your domain and your competitors’ domains’ visibility and estimated traffic.

– See the number of keywords in the campaign you and your competitors have in the top 3, top 10, top 20, and top 100 positions.

SEMrush Position Tracking - Top Rankings

The ‘Rankings’ report provides you with data on your ranking and your competitors’ ranking for every keyword you’ve set up in the campaign.

SEMrush Position Tracking - Rankings

The report is organized as a table with a list of keywords.

If you need more detailed analysis, go to the Landing Pages sections to see which pages rank for which keywords.

And since you can check your positions at a local level, you can always identify your niche competitors by using the Competitors Discovery option.

Using the Cpanel: Look for something with a name like: “file manager,” “file management,” etc.

Using an FTP client: After you have entered a server file directory, you can get your access logs. You can be found in these three most popular types of HTTP servers and locations:

Kinsta Review: Is It Worth the Price?

Kinsta Review

Kinsta is a performance-oriented managed WordPress host that’s powered by Google Cloud Platform, which is the same hardware running Google’s own products.

Since they were founded in 2013, Kinsta have been working to become the hosting provider of choice for WordPress users who are prepared to look beyond marketing campaigns and low prices to find a fast and secure home for their website.

That’s not to say the $30-per-month entry-level plan from Kinsta isn’t competitive compared with other premium managed WordPress hosts, it’s just that this isn’t low-cost budget hosting.

What you get for your money is managed WordPress hosting. This means Kinsta not only takes care of some aspects of managing a WordPress website for you, but they also host your site in an environment that’s optimized for WordPress websites.

What is Managed WordPress Hosting?

Managed WordPress hosting is a premium hosting service made for WordPress. Every aspect of the server is managed by the provider and is tailored according to WordPress’s specific needs. This includes many technical options, including server speed/loading time, storage space, security, and updates.

For the customer, the two main pros of the right managed WP hosting are:

Performance: As the server is configured for WordPress, factors like uptime, response time, and site speed are top-notch. A website hosted on a managed host will typically be much faster than those hosted on entry-level shared hosting plans.

Ease of Use: With managed plans, the hosting company is in charge of the technical aspects of your site, saving you a lot of time and hassle. Companies like Kinsta have a highly experienced support team, so you and your website are in safe hands.

The cons of this type of hosting usually reside in:

Pricing: While not the most pricey hosting type, managed WP hosting is more pricey than entry-level shared web hosting.

Being WordPress Specific: This type of hosting is specifically made for hosting WordPress websites. While you can run any PHP-based code on those servers, you will often be more limited than with a VPS plan or dedicated server.

Many companies are now offering this specific hosting, including WP Engine and of course Kinsta which we are discussing in this article.

But is Kinsta the right host for your needs and budget?

That’s what we plan on helping you figure out through this review.

Bottom line: Don’t want to read all the details? Let us give it to you straight. If you have the money to spare, Kinsta’s managed WordPress hosting plans are absolutely worth the price of admission. Few other hosts can actually match the power of the servers used to run Kinsta sites.

Don’t have the money? Try a bargain-priced shared hosts. Hostinger is my top recommendation, but don’t think for a moment you’ll be getting anything on the same level of what Kinsta provides.

Kinsta Pros & Cons

It is now time for us to quickly glance through the pros and cons of Kinsta:

Pros

Cons

Great Uptime: Nothing to complain about here, Kinsta runs virtually 100% of the time. If the rate drops below 99.9%, you get some money back.

Solid Performance: It’s good for both your SEO and your user experience. The powerful CDN, free SSL, and last-gen PHP also give them points here.

Made for WordPress: That means the support knows what they’re talking about, the architecture is optimized for the CMS, and you get useful resources on plugins and other WordPress-specific tools.

30 Day Money-Back Guarantee: 30 days is a substantial trial period and should be more than enough time for most people to decide if they want to continue on.

Free Site Transfers: Unlimited free site migrations from WP Engine, Siteground, DreamHost, Bluehost, HostGator, A2 Hosting and more.

Support: One of Kinsta’s biggest strengths is their support team. Kinsta offers 24/7 support via the Intercom widget, a live chat and ticket solution.

Easy to Use: Straightforward navigation and a pleasant user experience for those who need to spend a bit of time in their hosting provider dashboard.

Several Data Centers: You can choose from 24 data centers, which is way more than most hosts offer.

Higher Prices: The biggest con of Kinsta is that it is costly. You get what you pay for, but it’s not for everyone.

Limitations: No unlimited storage, CDN, or monthly visits. If you go over, you’ll be charged extra.

No Free Email or Domain: They don’t offer email hosting and domains. If you want a custom email address or domain, you would have to use a third-party service.

Kinsta Performance

One of the main reasons to choose premium managed WordPress hosting is the faster website loading times you can expect. However, with so many web hosting companies now offering WordPress-optimized services, simply choosing a plan marketed as managed WordPress hosting doesn’t guarantee impressive site speed.

So, how does Kinsta perform? As a dedicated WP host, it was created to work with all of the WordPress functionality and features while improving overall performance.

Due to the popularity of WP, there are plenty of hosting platforms that claim they’re optimized for the CMS. How does Kinsta compare?

To help you to decide whether Kinsta deliver the levels of performance you’re looking for, we’ve carried out some tests. These showed how fast a WordPress website loaded and how well multiple simultaneous visitors were handled.

Kinsta Loading Speed Test

Speed is one of the most important performance metrics that you should look for. A faster website offers a good user experience and boosts your SEO at the same time.

Users hate slow websites. In fact, recent studies suggested that a single second delay can cost you 7% less conversions and 11% less page views.

strangeloop speed study

But how fast do different Kinsta-hosted websites load?

We used Pingdom’s website speed test tool to run our tests. You can see the results in the screenshot below:

kinsta pingdom test

According to Pingdom’s website speed test, we found that this site loads in just under one seconds. That means our site is faster than 90% of tested sites.

To test how Kinsta servers would respond to increased traffic, we used a tool called LoadImpact.

You can see the results in the chart below:

Kinsta LoadImpact test

The blue line is the number of active virtual users on the site, it increases from 0 all the way up to 50, and the green line is the server load time.

Essentially, this chart shows that the load times always stayed around 510 ms, no matter how many visitors were active on the site. That’s a good thing and indicates that your site will perform well even when your site is getting real traffic.

Kinsta Server Response Time

To test the Kinsta server’s response time we used a tool called Bitcatcha. We prefer it because it isolates content from the server as the site loads. Consequently, you get precise results on the actual server response, regardless of the amount of content on the site.

Here is a screenshot of the results:

Kinsta Bitcatcha Test

These are some of the fastest speeds we’ve seen in mainland US by a web host. The East returned 19 milliseconds, while the West registered an astonishingly fast response time of 7 milliseconds.

Unfortunately, the speeds dip when we cross over to other areas. But only slightly, considering the slowest speed of 304ms recorded in Bangalore is still remarkably fast.

The overall result? Well, Kinsta managed an overall grade of A+. Basically, the highest attainable score on Bitcatcha.

Going by these results, it’s evident that Google Cloud Platform is one heck of an asset. And most importantly, Kinsta is indeed proving to be one of the best performing managed WordPress hosts.

Kinsta Support and Customer Service

One of Kinsta’s biggest strengths is their support team. We mean it – it’s comprised entirely of veteran WordPress developers and Linux hosting engineers. This means the technical level of support is one of the best on the market.

Kinsta offers 24/7 support via the Intercom widget, a live chat, and a ticket solution.

Why is Intercom better than regular live chat support? Because Intercom isn’t tied to a specific window. That is, you can navigate through the dashboard without affecting your chat. Or, you can even completely close the window and your chat history will be preserved for the next time you access your dashboard.

They have a great response time as they reply to your message a few minutes after you contact them in most cases.

On top of this, we really like the regularly updated Kinsta blog and handy knowledge base, with tips, articles and a glossary of tech terms.

Just be aware – Kinsta purposefully does not offer phone support. That’s not a negative to me as I prefer live chat anyway – but it is something that you should be aware of.

Kinsta offering a full 30 days for you to try out its hosting services with no risk. 30 days is a substantial trial period and should be more than enough time for most people to decide if they want to continue on.

Kinsta Plans, Features, and Pricing

Kinsta is a really expensive service. If you’re used to regular shared hosting, which sells for around $1-10 a month, we’re talking about increasing the price 3-30 times. However, that money goes somewhere.

Value-for-money-wise, this is a service far above the competition.

Domains simply aren’t available through Kinsta, not for free and not for purchase. This cements Kinsta as a service that doesn’t look to make money off reselling extras to you. You pay for the service, and it’s the best service, but the domain is left up to you.

There are no hidden upsells, no hidden fees, and a 30-day money-back guarantee is available with all plans.

Kinsta has a whopping 10 hosting plans to choose from:

Kinsta Plans

What can you expect from each Kinsta plan?

So obviously, the reason Kinsta has so many plans is that each of them is segmented based on the number of websites you can run, monthly visits, storage, and CDN storage, which I don’t think many other providers usually limit.

Still, all of the plans include a number of features, such as the following:

  • Very good customer support. It’s only via chat, but their agents are top-notch, and they work 24/7.
  • WordPress-specific site architecture.
  • Staging environment to test your website before publishing changes.
  • Free premium migrations.
  • Unlimited basic migrations from other hosts via a WordPress plugin.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Automatic database optimization.
  • Automatic daily backup and manual backup points.

Now for specific plans, the names are pretty much self-explanatory.

STARTER: Good for a small WP-hosted business website or blog. Just remember that if you deal with heavy files, for instance as a photographer or videographer, you might need to upgrade to the next plan.

PRO: Better suited to small-medium business websites. A big blog should probably go on that plan too, but Kinsta doesn’t actually recommend it for an online store.

BUSINESS 1: this is where things become serious in terms of monthly visitors and storage. It’s also got twice the amount of PHP workers per site as the previous plan, which is what Kinsta says helps multiple requests needed for eCommerce.

Then don’t forget that you have Business plans 2, 3, and 4, with added numbers of monthly visitors and storage. Finally, Enterprise plans 1, 2, 3, and 4 also scale everything up in terms of numbers.

Kinsta & Developer Features

For developers, you’ll be happy to hear that Kinsta also includes staging, integration with WP-CLI, Composer and Git, and one-click cloning.

The staging environments is particularly well-designed, as you can see from the screenshot below:

kinsta staging feature

Each environment works by creating a one-click copy of your site, but common sense applies when pushing the changes back to the live version (create a backup, double-check wp-config.php, etc…)

kinsta push staging live

Conclusion

Kinsta is a solid managed WordPress host. They offer fast managed WordPress hosting with impressive levels of uptime and the ability to handle multiple visitors at the same time.

If you have a website with heavy traffic, or you operate an eCommerce store, Kinsta gives you the security you need to protect your website against hacking.

They offer 24×7 support via Intercom. All of their support team members are highly skilled Linux Engineers and WordPress developers. This ensures that your problem is resolved quickly.

Because of its price, I don’t think Kinsta is necessarily the best host for beginners. That is, if you’re launching your first website, you can probably save some money by using a host like SiteGround.
